He applied himself to a second glass of the old Madeira, with increased relish.
a glass
the glass (例の一杯)
無冠詞の glass(ガラス)

I ate a...a...a hot dog!(a sandwich, a rice ball

I ate ...uh...uh...meat! (French bread, rice)

Singing a song of lost love, a man walked through a field of corn.

⇒「1人の恋人」を意味するa love という別の単語を使って、singing a song of a lost love という方法はある。

the plant(その植物)や、the ears(その穂)、the kernels(その粒)、またthe food(一般的に食べ物としてのトウモロコシ)などもすべて含めた総合的な意味をもつ言葉であり、

    a subject:話題
余分なthe⇒24
余分なa ⇒0
theが余分
but
例の What...?
...the best test of truth is the power of the thought to get itself accepted in the competition of the market...
@I found ham in the refrigerator.
AI found the hams in the refrigerator.
BI found a ham in the refrigerator.
    単数:a, the, this など
複数:some, the, these など
@Hope chests of this design are available in a range of sizes and in several types of wood.
AFirst, we arranged the designs according to size and type, and then we discussed what woods would be most appropriate to use with them.
BPaulownia is a wood which lends itself comfortably to the size and type of design traditionally used in this country for chests of drawers.
・Mother's mild may be nature's most nearly perfect food, but among the divinely inspired creations of man, beer is surely his most magnificent achievement.
●design:
This design and that design are two of the world's most famous designs.

●size:

When shopping for a new car, size is not the only important consideration.
・It's not the size of the man in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the man.

●type:

wood:
Wood retains a warmth of texture and, in fact, may often become more beautiful with age.

information
equipment
knowledge
evidence
advice
encouragement
assistance
help
health
dependence
tube:

⇒tubing(不可算名詞)
×After repeated breakdowns, machine was replaced with more reliable equipment.

⇒one of our machines was replaced

⇒(the, our など)machinery

tube/tubing の例と同じように、
a friend of my mother=one of my mother

the friend of my mother
my mother's friend

    freezer ⇒ the freezer
microwave oven ⇒ her microwave

the feezer that is expected part of any home.
First I tried calling him on the telephone, but no one answered, so then I tried calling him on my walkie-talkie.
いきなり her cat ⇒her one and only cat という意味
her microwave も同じ。

she put it in one of her microwaves
she put it in a microwave
という
In April, I introduced the coach of my tennis club to an ex-wife of my brother, and by June the two were already married.

×It is often noted that Japanese college students seldom ask questions in their classes and that this appears to be not simply because of the shyness.

突然"the shyness"⇒「一体"What shyness?"」

〇・・・this appears to be not simply because of the (particular type of ) shyness for which the Jpanese are well known.
He seems completely different from the Prof. Nakamura I knew 7 years ago.

"Once upon a time, there were an old man and an old woman.. The old man..."
but
In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth.

In a beginning, God created a heaven and an earth.
Notes on the Writing of Scientific English.

He is interestedn in the painting of of pictures.
He is interested in painting pictures.

The cranes were observed with binoculars.
cancelled the reservations by telephone.
the article was written on a word processor.
by
A(特に製造・製作・発明・創作の)行為者:・・・によって。
The cranes were observed (by us) with binoculars.
through:
The deliciouss beer was finally produced suceessfuly (by Kirin) through the efforts of its best researchers.(作用力)
Much of Mother Theresa's work is done (by her) through the United Nations.(媒介)
He was arrested (by the police) through a misunderstanding.(理由)
Kawabata's best writing was achieved (by him) through a desire to capture the essence of classical beauty.(動悸)
"written on a word processor"のようなon の働きは、もっと微妙であるが、この場合は、
The performance was shown on television.
We heard the news on a late night radio program.
written on a typwriter

written with a pen
The speech was first delivered in English through an interpreter over the company's closed-circuit terevision system and was later broadcast by NHK on all its radio stations under the title "Expressing Yourself Better with a Variety of Prepositions."

She left in a hurry on an errand.
Having discovered a cure for baldness, the scientist was able to build a second home on the ocean in Hayama.
    時間表現のin とon
We were together on a weekend in July.
He was born in 1876 on the Fourth of July.
In the evening, she usually walks her dog.
The last time she walked her dog was on the evening of July 15.
get in the car.
get on the train.

train, airplane, ship, bus

car, taxi, private aircraft

in time
on time
